Smart Industry

The Dutch Smart Industry initiative aims to stimulate the use of existing, and the development of new, ICT within all aspects of the industrial value chain in order to achieve the development of smart processes, services and products.

CT plays a key role within Smart Industry due to the fact that matters such as design, production, ordering, inventory and delivery are optimised by ICT applications.

Smart Industry goes beyond technology. It opens the door for completely new business models. If the manufacturing industry not only wants to be adept at generic mass production, but also wants to master the serial production of unique items, this requires a totally different organisation. Production processes must also be set up in such a way that they can be specified according to the wishes of the consumer. And people and machines will have to work together in a different way.

NWO is making 3.4 million euros available on the basis of public-private partnerships to further support research and development in this area.

Accelerating Mass Personalization in Orthopedics facilitated by Machine Learning and Bone MRI-based Digital Fabrication.

This project aims at development of personalized implants to improved accuracy of reconstructive surgery. A crucial prerequisite for successful application of digital fabrication in orthopedics is the availability of accurate 3D information of structure and function of the bone and surrounding soft tissue. Recent advancements in quantitative MRI and machine learning enable characterization of both soft tissue and bone in terms of structure, type and function.

Certification of production process quality through Artificial Intelligence (CERTIF-AI)

Production processes can be made ‘smarter’ by exploiting the data streams that are generated by the machines that are used in production. In particular these data streams can be mined to build a model of the production process as it was really executed – as opposed to how it was envisioned. This model can subsequently be analyzed and stress-tested to explore possible causes of production prob-lems and to analyze what-if scenarios, without disrupting the production process itself. It has been shown that such models can successfully be used to diagnose possible causes of production problems, including scrap products and machine defects.
