Imec originates in 1984 as an independent research centre for micro- and later nanoelectronics.
The aim is to bundle all academic knowledge around chip technology in Flanders. Because that technology is the engine for the third industrial revolution - and thus for the region's continued prosperity.
Since 2016, iMinds (formerly IBBT), Flanders' strategic research centre in the field of digital innovation, has also been part of imec. As a result, today you will find both software and hardware under one roof at imec.
In 2019, imec endorsed the VOKA Charter Sustainable Business. Because we are convinced that we can contribute to a sustainable future with our research, internal processes and local initiatives.
