Kids First, towards a pedagogical sport climate
Kids First, towards a pedagogical sport climate is the title of a major study conducted at sports clubs to create a pedagogical sports environment 'on the ground.' A pedagogical sports climate centers on the child, focusing on a development-oriented, enjoyable, caring, and safe sports environment.
Smart Sports Exercises: Intelligent Sports Exercises
In spring 2024, we spoke with Dr. ir. Dennis Reidsma. Dennis is an associate professor at the Human Media Interaction group and a lecturer in the Creative Technology and Interaction Technology programs at the University of Twente. Dennis's research focuses on designing playful interactions in smart environments. He has been involved in creating interactive play platforms for children, designing games for people with multiple or severe intellectual disabilities, gait rehabilitation, volleyball training, indoor rowing, and more. The central theme is the influence of technology on social and physical behavior and user experiences.
Active4Life; optimization of use and effects of eHealth
The majority of the chronically ill (84%) and of the less educated adults and elderly (72%) do not get enough exercise. For these groups, even a little more exercise would have major health benefits. Active4Life investigates how to encourage adults and the elderly (healthy and sick) to move more. Special attention is paid to vulnerable groups such as people with a lower education and with low health and digital skills.
Active4Life is funded by ZonMw's Sport and Exercise research program and is executed by prof. dr. Lilian Lechner, professor of Health Psychology at the Open University and his team. The consortium further consists of Open University partners (Psychology, Computer Science, Educational Sciences), Zuyd University of Applied Sciences, the University of Amsterdam and partners Gemeente Kerkrade, Kanker.nl and NLActief, the industry association of the recognized and entrepreneurial sports and exercise companies in the Netherlands. The project started at the end of 2019; we spoke with Lilian in early December 2022.
WheelPower: wheelchair sports and data science push it to the limit
The Netherlands won 59 medals and finished fifth in the medal standings at the 2021 Tokyo Paralympic Games. TeamNL athletes captured 25 gold, 17 silver and 17 bronze medals. To maintain and even strengthen this position in this rapidly professionalising field, more knowledge is needed on how to optimise the ability of athletes in wheelchairs to improve their competitive performance. This requires not only new knowledge based on objective measurement data from training, testing and competitions, but, in particular, direct feedback of the analysed data to athlete and coach to optimise training, wheelchair adjustment and competition performance.
