Sport and exercise 2017

The purpose of the call for subsidies Sport and Movement 2017 is to strengthen multidisciplinary research, including data science, in the field of (top) sports and physical activity and to stimulate the use of revenues (knowledge and data).

The Research Programme Sport and Exercise 2017 focuses on:

1. Obtaining focus and mass in sports research.

2. Multidisciplinary research that fits within the main themes of the National Knowledge Agenda and the NWA route Sport & Movement.

3. The use of data science for sports research.

4. Increasing the revenues of funded research projects.

What can be requested?

The call is aimed at two-year research projects in the field of (top) sport and exercise. It concerns multidisciplinary research, including data science, fitting within the main themes of the National Knowledge Agenda for Sport and Exercise: 'Better performance', 'Lifelong movement', 'The value(s) of sport' and the NWA route Sport & Exercise.


There are substantive, organisational and financial preconditions, preconditions for sustainable cooperation and for (big) data. See the call for subsidies for a description of the preconditions. The ZonMw Sports Injury Prevention Programme has been set up for development-oriented and implementation-oriented applications in the field of universal and/or selective sports injury prevention.

Who can apply?

Only project consortia consisting of three categories of organisations, as described in the call for subsidies, can submit a subsidy application. The main applicant works at a university or college. The project consortium consists of at least 4 people, working for at least 4 different organisations.


A maximum subsidy of €420,000 per grant application applies. A total of €1,680,000 is available for research projects.
