Big Data Digital Humanities

Experienced PhD researchers can apply for funding on behalf of consortia for research projects aimed at research at the intersection of Big Data and Digital Humanities in relation to the creative industry.

With the funding of proposals within this call, NWO wants to contribute to the development of research in the field of creative industry and Big Data and at the same time give an impulse to research in the field of Digital Humanities. The research programme is therefore not only part of the top sector Creative Industry (via CLICKNL) and the Smart Culture domain, but also of the ecosystem of Commit2Data.

Preconditions for research proposals

Research proposals submitted:

  • must contain a clear ICT research component or aim at the development of new digital methods
  • are aimed at answering a content-driven humanities question
  • relate to different types of data and/or different types of sources
  • Submitters of research proposals are asked to explain why the intended project can be seen as a contribution to the Big Data agenda.

For whom - Consortia

Applications can be submitted on behalf of consortia consisting of researchers from at least two different faculties (and/or two knowledge institutions) and at least one private partner, who (alone or together with several private partners and/or public partners) provides the required matching. The lead applicant is an experienced PhD researcher with a permanent or temporary appointment at a Dutch university or a research institute recognised by the NWO.

Within this call, a researcher can submit only one application as lead applicant. As a co-applicant, a researcher may be involved in a maximum of two different applications.


In this call, applications can be submitted for embedded research, strategic research or a combination of both.

Embedded research

Embedded research is intended to promote and further develop the interaction and cooperation between science and business. Scientists, knowledge users and companies can come together to do research or to further develop products or services for the creative industry. Preconditions are:

  • The maximum NWO funding that can be applied for is 125,000 euros, the minimum size is 75,000 euros.
  • The duration of the project is a minimum of six months and a maximum of five years.
  • With the funding or contribution, at least one researcher (not the lead or co-applicant) must be appointed during the duration of the project.
  • For all junior researchers, AIOs and postdocs to be appointed a minimum contract size of 0.5 FTE applies.

Strategic research

Strategic research proposals focus on long-term research issues of the business community or (social) institutions, in the form of financing of PhD positions and/or postdoc research. Preconditions are:

  • The maximum funding to be applied for from NWO is 500,000 euros, the minimum size is 250,000 euros.
  • The duration of the project is a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years.
  • The funding or contribution must include the appointment of at least two researchers (not the lead or co-applicant) for the duration of the project.
  • For all junior researchers, AIOs and postdocs to be appointed a minimum contract size of 0.5 FTE applies.
