Smart culture

Experienced postdoctoral researchers may apply on behalf of consortia for funding for research projects focused on research on the intersection of Big Data and Digital Humanities in relation to the creative industry.

Development of research into creative industries and Big Data, while stimulating research within the field of Digital Humanities. The research program is therefore not only part of the Top Sector Creative Industry (via CLICKNL) and the Smart Culture domain, but also of the ecosystem of Commit2Data.

Criteria for research proposals

Research proposals must:

Have a clear ICT research component or should be focused on the development of new digital methods;

Be aimed at answering a content-driven question within humanities;

Relate to different types of data and/or different sources.

Applicants will be asked to explain why their proposed project should be seen as a contribution to the Big Data agenda.

For whom - consortia

Applications may be submitted on behalf of consortia consisting of researchers from at least two different faculties (and/or two research institutes) and at least one private partner, who (alone or together with several private and/or public partners) provide the required congruency.

The lead researcher is an experienced postdoctoral researcher with a permanent or a temporary position at a Dutch university or at a NWO approved research institute.

A researcher may submit no more than one application within this call as the lead researcher. As a co-applicant, a researcher may be involved in up to two different applications.

Conditions

Applications in this call can be submitted for embedded research, strategic research or a combination of the two.

Embedded research

Embedded research is intended to promote and expand the interaction and collaboration between science and business. Scientists, knowledge users and businesses can thus come together to do research or to further develop products or services for the creative industry. The conditions are:

The maximum requested funding from NWO is 125.000 euros; the minimum amount is 75.000 euros.

The duration of the project is a minimum of six months and a maximum of five years.

With the funding or contribution, at least one researcher (who is not the lead researcher or a co-applicant) should be appointed for the total duration of the project.

All appointed junior researchers, PhD students and postdocs are entitled to a minimum appointment of 0.5 FTE.

Strategic research

Strategic research proposals focus on long-term research issues of business or (social) institutions, in the form of funding for doctoral programs and/or postdoctoral research.

The conditions are:

The maximum requested funding from NWO is 500.000 euros; the minimum amount is 250.000 euros.

The duration of the project is a minimum of two years and a maximum of five years.

With the funding or contribution, at least two researchers (who are not the lead researcher or a co-applicant) should be appointed for the total duration of the project.

All appointed junior researchers, PhD students and postdocs are entitled to a minimum appointment of 0.5 FTE.
